Your boiler is showing a mysterious error code like F3, 6A 227, or E6 and you don’t read French? This English guide decodes the most common Buderus and Viessmann error codes seen on boilers installed in Luxembourg. For each code you’ll find: what it means, likely causes, whether you can reset safely, and when to call a professional.
Why these two brands?
Roughly 70% of residential boilers installed across Luxembourg are Buderus or Viessmann. Other brands you may encounter include Vaillant, De Dietrich, Weishaupt, Saunier Duval and ELM Leblanc. This guide focuses on the two dominant brands first; other brands will be added based on demand.
Quick reference — most common error codes
Buderus (Logamax Plus GB125 / GB132, Logano G125 / G215)
- 6A / 6A 227 — Burner Control Unit (BCU) fault
- 6L / 6L 229 — Flame ionisation sensor fault
- 0U — Water pressure too low
- 2L / 2L 329 — Air flow / fan fault
- 0Y 276 — Flow overheating
- Buderus GB132 — Complete error code guide
Viessmann (Vitodens 100 / 200 / 300, Vitopend 100, Vitocal)
- D7 — Burner control unit (LMU) fault
- E8 — Domestic hot water sensor fault
- FC / FD / FF — Burner safety tripped
- A9 — Vitocal heat pump condensate sensor
- B7 — Coding card fault
- F5 / F5 0-9 — Flow sensor open circuit
- CL — Service / maintenance code
- C5 — Primary circulation fault
- E9 — DHW tank sensor fault
- B1 — Primary temperature sensor fault
- F7 — Return flow sensor open circuit
What to do before calling
- Write down the exact code — letters + numbers + sub-code if shown (e.g., « 6A 227 » not just « 6A »). The sub-code tells the technician what’s likely failing before they even open the boiler.
- Note when it first appeared — after a cold snap? During heavy DHW use? After an intervention?
- Check the basics — is the pressure gauge in the green zone (1.0–2.0 bar when cold)? Is there gas (a gas hob ignites normally)? Is the boiler getting power?
- Try a single reset — press and hold the reset button for 3 seconds. If the code comes back within hours, stop resetting. Repeated forced restarts can damage the boiler and invalidate the warranty.
- Call a professional — especially for any code involving the burner safety (F3, FC, FD, FF on Viessmann; 6A, 4C, 0Y on Buderus).
The Luxembourg context — why this matters
- Annual boiler maintenance is legally required in Luxembourg. Skipping it invalidates your home insurance coverage and can cause sale/rental issues.
- Hard water causes premature wear on heat exchangers and DHW sensors. See our water softener guide if you haven’t already installed one.
- Only an agréé (certified) technician can legally work on your gas boiler. Self-repair is technically possible for minor issues but may void warranty and insurance.
- Emergency call-out typical cost: 150–sur devis in Luxembourg City and suburbs, 200–sur devis outside. Most issues can wait until next business day unless there’s a water leak or gas smell.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to use the boiler if it shows an error code?
Depends on the code. Safety codes (burner control faults, temperature safety trips) stop the boiler automatically — that’s fine, no action needed from you. Sensor faults sometimes let the boiler run degraded — still safe short-term. Never bypass or ignore a code that’s causing shutdown.
How do I find the sub-code if only a letter shows?
On most Viessmann Vitotronic controllers: hold the OK button and cycle through the info menu. On Buderus Logamax: the sub-code appears after the initial flash or can be read via the KIM service key. If in doubt, photograph the display and show the photo to your heating engineer.
