Weber & Fils technician - boiler maintenance Luxembourg

Your Buderus boiler shows the error code 6L, possibly with 6L 229, 6L 514, or 6L 548. This fault points to the flame ionisation sensor — the electrode that detects whether the burner is actually lit. Without its signal, the boiler shuts the gas off as a safety measure.

What does 6L mean?

The 6L code signals a flame ionisation sensor fault. The ionisation rod (also called flame-sense electrode) sits in the combustion chamber and detects ionised particles when the gas burns. If it doesn’t pick up a clear signal during ignition or while the burner runs, the boiler cuts the gas immediately — a critical safety behaviour.

Symptoms

  • Boiler tries to fire, then shuts down within seconds
  • Ignition click audible but no stable flame
  • No hot water, no heating
  • Sometimes worse in cold or humid weather (condensation on the sensor)
  • Reset works briefly, then the fault comes back

Affected Buderus models

  • Buderus Logamax Plus GB125 / GB132
  • Buderus Logano G125 / G215
  • Buderus Logamax Plus GB172

Meaning of the sub-codes

6L 229 — No ionisation signal during ignition. Sensor fouled, misaligned, or incorrectly positioned.
6L 514 — Unstable signal during operation. Aging sensor or unstable flame pattern.
6L 548 — Variant with an earth/ground fault — often linked to the boiler chassis or the earth wiring.

Common causes

  • Fouled sensor (60% of cases) — carbon deposit after several years without service
  • Misaligned or oxidised sensor — clean or replace
  • Gas supply issue — low or unstable gas pressure
  • Ignition board fault — rarer but possible
  • Poor earth bonding of the boiler

Can you DIY clean it?

Sensor cleaning can help, but opening the burner compartment is strictly regulated in Luxembourg — any gas-side intervention requires an entreprise agréée. A careless clean can bend or damage the electrode and make things worse.

Replacement cost

Sensor part: on request. Labour: 45 min to 1 hour (strip chamber, clean, replace, combustion test). Typical all-in cost: on request.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an ionisation sensor last?

Typically 5–10 years depending on gas quality and ignition frequency. Annual service with sensor cleaning extends its life significantly.

Is code 6L a safety risk?

No — the code IS the safety. It’s the boiler refusing to inject gas without a confirmed stable flame. This is working as designed.

My code shows 6L without a sub-code — how do I see the detail?

The sub-code usually flashes after the main code, or you can read it via the KIM service key or the info menu. When you call our technical service, we’ll walk you through reading it live.
