Buderus 6L error (flame ionisation sensor) — what it means and what to do

Your Buderus boiler shows the error code 6L, possibly with 6L 229, 6L 514, or 6L 548. This fault points to the flame ionisation sensor — the electrode that detects whether the burner is actually lit. Without its signal, the boiler shuts the gas off as a safety measure.

What does 6L mean?

The 6L code signals a flame ionisation sensor fault. The ionisation rod (also called flame-sense electrode) sits in the combustion chamber and detects ionised particles when the gas burns. If it doesn’t pick up a clear signal during ignition or while the burner runs, the boiler cuts the gas immediately — a critical safety behaviour.

Symptoms

• Boiler tries to fire, then shuts down within seconds
• Ignition click audible but no stable flame
• No hot water, no heating
• Sometimes worse in cold or humid weather (condensation on the sensor)
• Reset works briefly, then the fault comes back
