Shower barely trickles, tap fills the kettle painfully slowly, dishwasher keeps warning about water supply — low water pressure in a Luxembourg home has several possible causes, some free to fix, others requiring a plumber. This guide walks through the diagnosis step by step.

First — is it really low pressure, or low flow?

Quick distinction:

  • Pressure = the force pushing water through the pipes (measured in bar)
  • Flow rate = the volume of water per unit time (litres/minute)

A partially blocked tap has low flow but normal system pressure. A pressure-reducing valve gone wrong gives genuinely low pressure. The fix differs completely.

Quick test — pressure vs flow

  1. Fully open a single cold tap
  2. Time how long it takes to fill a 1-litre container
  3. 10+ seconds = low flow (could be pressure or blockage)
  4. 5-10 seconds = normal for a typical Luxembourg home (~10-15 L/min)
  5. Under 5 seconds = excellent

Then open multiple taps simultaneously. If one tap is fine alone but drops significantly with others running, your issue is likely system-wide pressure, not a local blockage.

Most common causes in Luxembourg

1. Scale-blocked aerator or shower head

The cheapest, most common issue. White mineral buildup on the tap aerator mesh or inside the shower head restricts flow. Luxembourg’s very hard water makes this happen fast — sometimes within months.

Fix: unscrew the aerator (anti-clockwise at the tap tip), soak in descaler or vinegar overnight, rinse and reattach. Shower heads: unscrew and soak the whole rose. Cost: on request if you have vinegar, on request for specialty descaler.

2. Partially closed isolation valve

Valves under sinks, behind toilets, and near the boiler sometimes get bumped partially closed. Fully open every isolation valve and retest.

3. Water softener bypass triggered accidentally

If your softener has a bypass lever, it may have been nudged to « bypass » position — water skips the softener and flow patterns can change.

4. Scaled-up water heater / boiler plate heat exchanger

On combi boilers (Vitodens 111-W, Buderus Logamax Plus combi), scale in the DHW heat exchanger reduces hot water flow specifically. Cold water flow is normal; hot is weak. Fix: plate heat exchanger descaling on request.

5. Pressure-reducing valve (PRV) failure

Many Luxembourg homes have a PRV near the main water inlet to keep domestic pressure at a safe 3-4 bar (street supply can be 8-10 bar). When the PRV fails, it can either let too much pressure through (taps blast, pipes rattle) or restrict flow (chronic low pressure). Replacement: on request.

6. Blocked strainer / filter

Many installations include a strainer before the PRV or water meter. Over years, these collect sediment and limescale. Cleaning or replacing is a standard maintenance task.

7. Hidden leak dropping system pressure

A silent leak somewhere in the circuit reduces pressure reaching the taps. See our water bill guide for the 2-hour meter test to detect leaks.

8. Supply-side issue (commune)

If your neighbours also have low pressure, the issue is upstream. Call your commune’s water service to check. Temporary drops during mains work are normal.

Diagnosis flowchart

  1. One tap affected? → Aerator / shower head descaling (90% chance)
  2. Hot water only? → DHW heat exchanger scale (combi boilers) or hot water heater issue
  3. All taps affected? → Check main stopcock fully open, check PRV
  4. Recent drop after a pipe repair or reno? → Something got disturbed, check isolation valves
  5. Neighbour also affected? → Commune supply-side
  6. None of the above? → Call a plumber for leak detection

Typical fix costs in Luxembourg

  • Aerator descaling / replacement: on request DIY, or on request as part of a plumber visit
  • Shower head replacement: on request depending on quality
  • PRV replacement: on request
  • Plate heat exchanger descaling: on request
  • Main strainer cleaning: on request
  • Leak detection + repair: on request depending on where it is

When to call a plumber vs DIY

DIY is fine for: aerator cleaning, shower head swap, opening visible isolation valves.

Call a plumber for: PRV work, heat exchanger descaling, suspected leaks, any work on the main incoming supply.

Frequently asked questions

What’s normal pressure in a Luxembourg home?

Typical static pressure after the PRV is 3-4 bar. Flow from a single tap at 10-15 L/min is normal for standard DN15/DN20 piping.

Can a water softener cause low pressure?

Only if the softener is undersized, regenerating frequently, or its internal valve is failing. A healthy softener adds minimal resistance. See our water softener guide.

My pressure dropped suddenly overnight — panic or not?

Slightly concerning. Possible causes: commune supply issue (call them), a burst pipe somewhere overnight (check basement, under sinks, outside), or a valve that got nudged. Run through diagnosis flowchart. If a burst is found, close the main stopcock immediately.
