Planning a bathroom renovation in your Luxembourg home? Before you commit to tiles, vanities, and fixtures, the plumbing decisions matter most — they determine what’s possible, how much it’ll cost, and whether you’ll regret choices down the line. This guide covers the plumbing-side planning for a Luxembourg bathroom renovation.

The three types of bathroom renovations

1. Cosmetic update (no plumbing changes)

New tiles, new paint, new vanity top, replace taps and shower head without moving anything. Cost: on request 000-on request 000. Plumbing role: minimal — replace visible fixtures.

2. Mid-level renovation (same layout, upgraded systems)

Replace shower enclosure with new unit, replace toilet, replace bathtub with walk-in shower, new mixer valves. Same fixture positions mostly retained. Cost: on request 000-on request 000. Plumbing role: significant.

3. Full remodel (new layout)

Moving toilet, tub, or sink positions. Often involves structural work. Cost: on request 000-on request 000+. Plumbing role: central — drives what’s possible.

Pre-renovation plumbing audit

Before touching anything, answer these questions:

What pipes do you have?

  • Copper — most LU homes built 1970-2005. Reliable, expensive to modify.
  • PER (PEX) / multicouche — most LU homes built 2005+. Flexible, easier to modify.
  • Galvanized steel — pre-1970. Often corroded inside, limited water flow. Renovation is good occasion to replace.
  • Lead — extremely rare in Luxembourg but possible in pre-1960 rural properties. Must be replaced for health reasons.

Where are the drain runs?

Drains follow gravity. Moving a toilet significantly changes drain requirements:

  • Toilet near original drain: easy, minor adjustment
  • Moving toilet 1-2 meters: possible but requires floor opening
  • Moving toilet across the room: complex, may require raised floor or macerator pump

What’s the water pressure and flow?

Test your existing pressure (see low pressure guide). Luxurious rain showers, body jets, and multiple simultaneous outlets need adequate pressure. If you’re planning a shower with three shower heads, make sure your supply can deliver.

Key plumbing decisions — what you’ll regret if you skip

Installation valves for every fixture

Every sink, toilet, shower should have a dedicated isolation valve. Skipping these to save on request means future maintenance requires shutting off the whole house. Non-negotiable in a proper renovation.

Thermostatic shower mixer (mandatory on new LU installs)

Luxembourg building code requires thermostatic mixers (mitigeur thermostatique) on new shower installations. Prevents scalding. Budget on request depending on brand/quality.

Anti-siphon valves on key drains

Not mandatory but highly recommended to prevent sewer smell backflow during heavy simultaneous drainage. on request per valve.

Access panels for future maintenance

If you tile over plumbing junctions, future repairs require breaking tile. An access panel (concealed or visible) at each junction point saves thousands in future maintenance.

Pre-install for future needs

Even if you don’t want a bidet now, pre-installing the water line and drain (capped off) makes future addition trivial. Same for heated towel rails, second shower, etc.

Waterproofing (SPEC / membrane)

Shower floor and lower walls must be waterproofed with a proper membrane before tiling (système d’étanchéité sous-carrelage). Skipping this = leaks into floor structure within 5-10 years. Non-negotiable.

Typical plumbing component costs (Luxembourg 2026)

  • Thermostatic shower mixer + shower head: on request (Grohe, Hansgrohe mid-range)
  • Bathroom faucet / basin mixer: on request
  • Toilet (close-coupled): on request installed
  • Wall-hung toilet + concealed cistern: on request 800 installed
  • Walk-in shower tray: on request 500 + install
  • Bathtub (acrylic): on request 200 + install
  • Bathtub (enameled steel / cast iron): on request 500 + install
  • Heated towel rail: on request + install
  • Bidet: on request + install (if rough-in exists)

Plumber labour in Luxembourg (2026)

  • Full bathroom plumbing rough-in (new layout): on request 500-on request 500
  • Fixture replacement only (same position): on request per fixture
  • Drain relocation: on request 500 depending on distance
  • Macerator pump install (for low-point toilets): on request 500 including pump

Timeline and sequencing

Typical full bathroom renovation in Luxembourg:

  1. Week 1: Demolition, removal of old fixtures
  2. Week 2: Plumbing rough-in, electrical rough-in, waterproofing
  3. Week 3: Tiling and setting
  4. Week 4: Fixture installation, final plumbing connections, testing
  5. Week 5: Snagging, final inspection, cleanup

Budget extra 1-2 weeks for delays. Bathroom out of service for 4-6 weeks typically.

Subsidies and tax benefits

  • Klimabonus does not cover cosmetic bathroom renovations, but does cover thermal water heating upgrades (solar thermal for DHW, heat pump DHW) that often coincide with a bathroom renovation
  • Water-saving fixtures with WELS / low-flow ratings may qualify for small commune grants
  • Full energy renovation including heating system changes: see Klimabonus guide

Selecting a plumber for your renovation

  • Always request multiple quotes (3 minimum) — prices vary significantly
  • Verify entreprise agréée certification — required for gas work if your boiler is in bathroom
  • Check references / past bathroom projects
  • Written detailed quote with itemized materials and labour, not just a bottom-line number
  • Payment schedule: typically 30% deposit, 30% mid-project, 40% on completion. Never 100% upfront.
  • Warranty: 2 years on labour, parts per manufacturer warranties

Frequently asked questions

Can I renovate a bathroom myself?

In Luxembourg: most plumbing work requires an entreprise agréée for insurance/warranty compliance. Cosmetic tasks (tiling, painting) can be DIY. Attempting full plumbing DIY puts your insurance at risk.

Wall-hung toilet vs close-coupled — worth the extra cost?

Wall-hung saves floor space and looks cleaner but costs 2-3x more. The concealed cistern is harder to service. Recommended only for renovations where the wall can support the frame (not all walls can).

Bath vs walk-in shower for resale value?

In Luxembourg, families and older buyers prefer having at least one bath in the home. Apartments targeting singles/young professionals often remove baths. Consider who your future buyer might be.

Underfloor heating in the bathroom?

Great addition, especially over cold tile. Adds on request per m² to renovation cost. Can tap off existing heating circuit or use electric mat for localized heating. Electric option is easier for retrofits.
