Stepping into a cold shower is never fun. Before you call a plumber (and pay on request+ for a call-out), 5 minutes of systematic checking often finds the issue. This guide walks through the diagnosis for combi boilers, tank water heaters, and heat pump systems typical of Luxembourg homes.
Step 1 — Cold at one tap or all taps?
Run the hot tap at a second location (different floor or far from the first). If it’s also cold, the source is the water heater/boiler. If it’s hot there but cold at the first tap, the issue is local — probably a failed mixer cartridge or a stuck tap.
Step 2 — Check the boiler or water heater
Is there an error code on the display?
Note the code and refer to our error code hub. Common hot-water related codes:
- E6 Viessmann — low pressure, cuts hot water
- E8 / E9 Viessmann — DHW sensor faults (see E8 / E9)
- 6A / 6L Buderus — burner can’t fire, no hot water
Is the pressure gauge in the green zone?
Should read 1.2-1.8 bar cold, 1.5-2.2 bar hot. Below 1 bar → refill the circuit.
Is the power light on?
No power = no hot water. Check the electrical panel and the plug feeding the boiler. A tripped breaker can cut hot water instantly.
Is the gas supply working?
Test a gas hob. If it lights normally, gas is fine. If not, commune gas outage or shut-off valve issue.
Step 3 — Combi boiler specific
Heating works but DHW doesn’t
Your boiler heats but not the water → DHW side specifically broken. Common causes:
- Scaled plate heat exchanger — hot water is weak AND lukewarm. Cost to descale: on request.
- 3-way diverter valve stuck in heating position — boiler routes all heat to radiators.
- DHW flow sensor failure — boiler doesn’t « know » you opened the tap.
- DHW temperature setting too low — check control panel is set to 55-60°C.
Eco mode on
Most combi boilers have an « eco » mode that reduces pre-heating. Result: first hot water takes 30-90 seconds instead of instant. If you’re impatient, disable eco. This is not a fault.
Step 4 — Tank water heater specific
Electric water heater (chauffe-eau électrique)
- Check the electrical circuit is on — a dedicated breaker on the panel
- Many LU installs have a « day/night » tariff clock — if miswired, the tank may only heat at night. Check the control.
- Feel the tank — if cold, power isn’t reaching the element. If warm at the top but cold water at the tap, maybe the element heats partially but the dip tube is broken.
- Aging element (calcium fouled) — reduced power, longer heating. Typical LU lifespan: 8-12 years. Replacement: on request.
Gas water heater (no central boiler)
Similar to combi troubleshooting: check gas, ignition, pressure. Tanks with pilot lights: check the pilot is still lit.
Step 5 — Heat pump systems
Heat pumps typically heat a hot water tank via a coil exchanger. Troubleshooting:
- Check the heat pump is running (outdoor unit fan turning)
- Check the programmed DHW schedule — some units only heat DHW during set hours
- Backup electric heater may not have kicked in during extreme cold — needs to be enabled if external temp is very low
- Error code on the heat pump controller — note and call professional
Step 6 — Still cold water everywhere after all checks
It’s time for a professional. Before calling, gather:
- Boiler / heater brand and model
- Install date (from the plate inside the front cover)
- Last annual service date
- Exact error code if any
- What you’ve already checked
Typical call-out in Luxembourg: on request for daytime diagnosis, on request for emergency (nights, weekends).
Most common « no hot water » causes in Luxembourg (by frequency)
- Low boiler pressure — 25% of calls. Free DIY fix.
- Scaled plate heat exchanger (combi) — 20% of calls. on request fix.
- DHW sensor fault — 15% of calls. on request fix.
- Burner control fault (LMU/BCU) — 10% of calls. on request fix.
- Tripped breaker / electrical — 10%. Free DIY fix.
- Gas supply issue — 8% of calls. Commune or Creos emergency.
- Pump failure — 5%. on request fix.
- Other (aging system, multiple faults) — 7%.
Preventive practices
- Annual service catches 80% of pending issues before they leave you cold
- Water softener slows scale buildup dramatically
- Keep DHW temperature at 55-60°C — cooler than that risks legionella, hotter accelerates scale
- Test the filling loop or expansion vessel annually
- Note unusual sounds or behavior early — don’t wait until it fails
Frequently asked questions
First shower of the day is lukewarm but afternoon showers are hot — why?
Classic tank water heater issue. The tank cools overnight. If insulation is degraded or the thermostat is too low, the first draw is lukewarm. Raise the thermostat to 60°C and check if the problem resolves.
Hot water takes 2 minutes to reach the tap — is that a fault?
Not necessarily. Long pipe runs between the boiler and far-off bathrooms can take time to flush cold « dead » water. A DHW recirculation loop (pricey install) fixes it but wastes energy. More practical: accept the wait, or install a small under-sink electric water heater for that specific tap.
My combi boiler is new but hot water keeps dropping during my shower — why?
Your combi is undersized for your demand. A 24 kW boiler might struggle if two people shower simultaneously with a power shower. Options: limit simultaneous use, upgrade to a higher-output combi, or switch to a combi + DHW tank configuration.
